As I prepared to reopen my photography studio and wanting to simplify my branding, I realized how much I loved the name and how special it was to me, so Honey Hill Digital Art Studio was born! I'll still specialize in boudoir photography but of course I'll continue to offer regular portrait sessions for my long term clients and new friends I meet along the way, and I also continue doing digital watercolor artwork. I blew past my goal for the first month in less than 3 weeks thank to you guys and your awesomeness! ​I'm currently booking for dates through the end of June 2017 for custom sessions as well as the new monthly specials. There are only 5 of the special sessions available each month so I definitely recommend booking early since they will probably sell out quickly now that booking is open for March's BeTween sessions, April's Bunny Trail sessions & May's Mom & Me photo specials. Mom & Me sessions are booking especially fast for May so if you'd like to snag one, I'd recommend booking ASAP! Now is also the time to get on the calendar for senior sessions for 2017 graduates, spring birthday portraits, family portraits, and maternity & newborn sessions for spring & summer due dates. I'll be open during spring break, which is the perfect time to book sessions for those with busy schedules!
March's special is for one of my favorite things to shoot--Tween sessions! They were so much fun and such a good experience for the tweens I photographed when I shot them last summer that I brought them back as this month's special session. These are a fun way for ages 9-14 to document those "in between years" and remember their personality, style, & interests at this stage in their life. I've got 3 more BeTween sessions left available for the month of March. You can see photos from past sessions, view the available packages and read more about the BeTWeen sessions on my blog.
It's time to start looking toward summer (ignore all that talk about snow this weekend, let's talk SUN)! I'll be working on beach dates in the next few weeks, so if you have a suggestion for which beach or a certain date, let me know! I'm planning for 2-3 beach dates this summer, hopefully with one of those being a long weekend. I plan to plant a field of wildflowers again for summer sessions here at the studio, wish me better luck with those this time!
I'll also start booking for Class of 2018 seniors very soon. If your 2017 senior hasn't booked yet IT IS TIME MAMA. You can't put it off anymore! If you did fall portraits, now is also a great time to do another senior session with cap & gown, spring sports uniforms, prom looks, or casual spring outfits.
My spring calendar at the design studio is filling up too! On March 18 I'll have a vendor space at Patetown Church of God during their Spring Fling event from 10-2. Come say hi! I'll also be showing my spring collection during the spring Art Walk at the Arts Council on April 7th in downtown Goldsboro. BeTween Sessions are specially designed portrait sessions for kids ages 9-14 to showcase their unique personality and style. They are a fun opportunity for teens and tweens to celebrate who they are and where they are right now in life. Not quite a little kid, not quite a teenager, this age group has their own opinion about what is cool and this is their chance to show it off to the world!

If you need to schedule a session for 2017, I am currently booking for dates through the end of March 2017. If you are due with a baby during my winter break, be sure to get in touch before I close in December so we can schedule your newborn session ASAP after the baby is born.
ORDERS
All online orders must be placed before Dec. 12 in order to be processed for Christmas delivery. Orders placed after Dec. 12 WILL NOT be processed until I return from winter break. NO EXCEPTIONS. All studio orders must be placed before Dec. 9 for Christmas delivery.

BeTween sessions are a chance to capture those last little moments of innocence and childhood that are often hidden amongst the teenaged fashion choices and dramatic facial expressions of these transitional years. They also give teens and tweens an opportunity to express themselves in a positive way and see how uniquely beautiful they are in a world where there simply isn't enough of that! I worked with several young models for some promotional images, allowing them to choose much of their own styling and posing and just be themselves, the way they want to be seen. They all came alive in their own way during their model session, letting their personality shine. I'll be sharing a mini gallery from each one soon but there are some sneak peeks below! Each model was totally different, with their own style, interests, and personality and that's exactly what these sessions are all about. All BeTween sessions will include a chance to plan out styling and outfits, choose the perfect location, shoot a custom portrait session, and review the proofs to see their awesome portraits and how beautiful they really are.

So, how did these sessions come about?
Awhile back I did a session for a client, neighbor, and friend of her daughter with her chicken. She chose her own wardrobe and I let her do her own thing since it was mostly just for fun. The results were magic! I'm sure some people thought we had lost our minds but it turned out to be one of my all time favorite portraits! I printed the photo below on a large canvas, hung it in the studio, took it with me to events, and not only did I love it, but she loved it, her family loved it, and it got compliments every time someone saw it because it was so purely her and such a perfect capture of her life at that age, when she wasn't quite a teenager and but not really a little girl anymore either. I knew I needed to do more of this--to give more kids an opportunity to express themselves in this way and give their parents a memory of these last fleeting moments of childhood.
These sessions grew out of a recurring conversation with my friends and clients. We often talked about how no matter what else changes, the tween years always seem to remain somewhat the same. Do you remember middle school? I do. No matter how much I try to forget! The clothes! The drama. The uncertainty. The sometimes secretly flirting with boys but also secretly playing with Barbies sometimes. The hair! The growth spurts. The attitude. It is a time of so many changes, but not so many celebrations--not many firsts happenings anymore, but not many lasts happening to celebrate yet either. Aside from annual school photos which generally don't capture their true personality or sports/dance or activity specific photos there just aren't a lot of calls to have your child photographed. Until now!

P.S. And just to put my money where my loud lipstick covered mouth is, here are 2 gems from my middle school years--big bangs, Sally Jesse Raphael glasses and all! I've always had an adventurous sense of fashion--hello 50 shades of plaid and button fly jeans, I see you and I ain't mad at you!!!--but the sheer awkwardness of the portraits is just painful. There is a better way! I promise! (oh and the basketball....no I didn't forget my uniform, I was the stat girl. so yeah, I don't get why i'm holding a basketball either.)

I've blown many, many bubbles from the very pink bubble gum they gave out when I was a kid! They still do things the old fashioned Southern way--they'll pump your gas and clean your windshield and are closed on Sunday to worship & visit, just like their sign out front says.

]]>This week I'll be sharing 10 of my most popular Senior Portrait images! Spring is here so Class of 2016 seniors who wanted spring senior portraits are starting to book, cap & gown and prom sessions are filling up weekends like crazy and I'm also starting my search for the Class of 2017 Senior Reps. You can find out more about the 2017 Senior Rep Program in this blog post and see some of my senior work on my Portfolio Page. Honestly, seniors used to terrify me and I did not shoot senior portraits for a very long time but they are probably my favorite genre of portraits to shoot now! Senior year is such a time of transition and documenting that in a way that makes parents AND seniors happy is a balancing act but it is one I love though, especially since there are so many styling options and creative ways to approach each session. Y'all know I love trying something new and coming up with unique ideas, plus senior sessions usually involve a lot of styling, and anything related to fashion or beauty makes me extra excited! Senior sessions can be such a great bonding experience for seniors and their families--it is so sweet to see dads carrying an armful of accessories down the street for their daughter or moms who help hunt down THE perfect sneaker for their son. I honestly believe everyone should have a portrait session at least once in their lives that is just about them and who they are right now in their life and senior year is a perfect time to do that, as seniors leave childhood behind and begin to explore their life as an adult. I encourage seniors to look to their past, present and future for inspiration for their sessions and to incorporate the things, places, hobbies and styles that will mark this time in their lives and speak to their unique personality.

I’m looking for fun seniors in Wayne County and the surrounding area (public, private & homeschool students in Johnston, Wilson, Greene, Pitt, Sampson, Lenoir, Duplin) who have great personalities, unique style, amazing smiles, and strong character to represent Just BECCA as senior portrait reps for 2016-2017. No more than 2 reps will be selected per school, and the first selections will be made in April 2016, so apply early! Applications will be accepted March 1-31, 2016 for the first round of selections. Senior Rep sessions will be scheduled for May-September 2016 and we will create Senior Rep referrals cards with your favorite images for you to share with your friends and classmates to earn credits towards free & discounted prints, albums, graduation announcements, mini sessions and more! Those selected as reps will have specially customized senior portrait experiences with session upgrades, special styling options, early access booking for senior mini sessions for graduation, prom, etc.

]]>10 Ways to Have a Better Family Portrait Session
1. Make an appointment and DO IT! The thing holding most people back from having gorgeous photos of their family is that they JUST DON'T DO IT. They are going to wait until it isn't so hot, or so cold, or their kids are a little older, or they lose weight. The truth is, for many people, they are going to wait, and wait, and wait.............until those moments are gone and none of those reasons for waiting are going to have been good ones. Your kids won't care if you could have probably stood to lose 15 pounds before the session. They won't care that they are snaggle toothed or that you made them wear an outfit they hated (okay, they might be mad about that, I'm still upset about a floral romper situation from the 90s but we'll get back to outfits) My point is, they WILL care that there aren't any photos one day.
2. Hire a photographer you like--both style and personality wise. If you are a really laid back family with big personalities, then a very formal photography studio with a photographer who is on the more serious side may not mesh well with your family. If you are a fan of a traditional posed portrait then my laid back style and personality might not be your style. That's okay. Find someone you like, who fits your budget, and you feel like you can trust to do their job without worry. Taking the time to find a photographer who fits well with your family's personality and who's style of work is appealing to you will pay off when you see your final images! 3. Schedule your session for a good time for your family--choose a time of day that works well for schedules and personalities. If you know your toddler is crazy in the afternoons, schedule a morning session. Have a teenager who doesn't like to get out of bed in the morning? Do everybody involved all a favor and book an afternoon session. Make sure your favorite team isn't playing!! Make sure you aren't on call for work. Double check your calendar. Make sure everyone in the family has it on their calendar--especially teenagers. Be sure to book ahead of time, as many photographers book up months in advance, especially outdoor photographers during nicer weather.
4. Plan ahead for outfits. Try on all pieces of your outfits ahead of time and make sure everything fits. Shoes too! Pick outfits that suit your style as a family but allow room to show individual personalities as well. Everyone doesn't have to wear the same outfit for people to know you are a family! Give family members a chance to voice their opinions. Everyone will be happier if they feel like they look their best and have had at least a little bit of say in their outfit.
5. Manage expectations. Be realistic about what you expect, keeping in mind personalities, ages, attention spans as you plan your session with your photographer. Work together to create a session that will represent who you are right now in your lives. Be sure to let everyone in the family know what will be expected during the session--listening, a good attitude, kind words, etc. No Debbie Downers!! I promise, individuals rarely get noticed in family photos, unless they are the grumpasaurus of their family. So unless you are a famous internet feline, no grumpy attitudes.
6. Negotiate. No, not with your photographer. They work hard and don't want to negotiate their paycheck any more than you do. I mean a little negotiation with the family--letting your teenager wear the ugly shoes they want--if they get a haircut, hints of a trip for ice cream afterwards for little ones who smile and listen, a promise not to complain next time the hubs wants to spend Saturday fishing if he doesn't gripe about wearing a shirt with buttons--goes a long way.
7. Clean faces & hands--if you love your photographer you will not give your child blue candy on the way to their photo shoot. Or red drink. Blue tongues and red Kool-aid 'stashes are the things I have nightmares about. Make sure noses, mouths, faces, and hands are clean! If you want extra brownie points clean under their fingernails. Check nails for chipped polish. Toes too!
8. Put your phone down. Even better, leave it in the car. There are a thousand articles on the internet about this, I don't need to tell you why! This also goes for your fire pager, gaming system, tiny tv you are watching the game on, etc. I will make an exception for on call doctors, but see #3 to avoid this!
9. Relax. If you have done all of the above, you can chill now. It is time to trust your photographer to bring this to life. If you went the more traditional route, sit up straight, show off those pearly whites and your trust your photographer to create a beautiful formal portrait. If you went more casual, then love on your family, hug your spouse, laugh at your kids. Trust your photographer to capture the connection that makes your family so special. Do not stress so hard trying to make everything perfect that you can't relax.
10. Get your photos printed! Don't keep a disc in a drawer, or only post on social media. Print them, hang them and show them off! I don't say this so you will spend money on prints and wall art from me or your photographer. I say this because you went through the effort to book a session, plan outfits, etc so why hide the results away on a disc? Print them! Make Christmas cards. Gift prints or mini albums to your family & friends. Order that giant canvas, hang it over your couch.That family is why you work hard every day, now fill up those walls with moments of you creating happy memories!

10 Things You Didn't Know About Just BECCA............
1. I'm allergic to dairy. Just kidding, I think everyone knows this about me because I complain about it ALL. THE. TIME. Mac & cheese and I were in a long term relationship. I'll never recover from the breakup.
2. Despite the fact that it looks like I wear the same 2 pairs of jeans over and over, I promise I don't! I'm just a fan of buying multiples of things I really, really like. Don't ask about the pair of heels I own in 5 different colors. Or how many bottles of Sally Hansen gel polish are under my bathroom sink.
3. I talk about food a lot. When I'm not talking about food I'm probably either thinking about food or eating (I'm eating goat cheese right now). I'm pretty much always down to eat. As long as I can pick the place. I'm picky.
4. If you see me without my cup with the yellow straw, I probably need coffee. With cashew milk and extra sugar. Iced. Year round.
5. My favorite animals are elephants, bears and big cats. I think bears would be less grumpy if they got more hugs. I'd most likely set off a stampede with my happy dance if I saw an elephant in the wild. I would totally try to snuggle a baby leopard if I could catch one. (A full grown one too, but we all know I don't run so that ain't happening.) These are just a few examples of why I am not a nature photographer. I'd last about 5 minutes and I'd be dead as a doornail.
6. One of my lifelong dreams is to see Willie Nelson in concert.
7. I think Triceratops is the coolest dinosaur. Always have, always will. Move over T-Rex.
8. I can't do a cartwheel.
9. My bike riding skills are the stuff viral videos are made of.
10. I'm the only one of my siblings with green eyes.
